Apple is laying the groundwork for an iPhone subscription

This past week Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, was asked questions about the idea of a prime subscription. He answered that question by stating that they are aware that there are a lot of users out there who have wanted this type of payment system. He also stated that Apple views this transition as a major growth area. If Apple switched to a subscription payment method, consumers would then have to pay for their iPhones and other technology on a monthly basis. Im curious to see if we will see any other news about this in the near future.

  1. I wonder if because of this Apple will lose a majority of their consumers because of this. I feel like many people would rather just pay on the spot for the whole phone instead of paying monthly. Personally I wouldn't mind it, but I'd like to know more information about the whole ordeal.

  2. If done right I think that this is an idea that could possible benefit all parties. Most notably, it will be important that they keep both options open so that they don't drive away any customers.

  3. I am personally against the idea of renting a phone from a company, but I don't have an Apple so this doesn't (immediately) affect me. As long as they keep this optional, its not a bad idea. It is when this becomes the only method, that I can envision future issues arising. Subscriptions are annoying to keep track of.

  4. They will definitely move forward with this model after they capture an audience with the apple tv plus subscription. Once they lock in consumers with the model then it will be deployed to the phone as a tactic to gain a larger market share in the phone market. They will leave the individual purchase option open as well because that would just be dumb to exclude those who aren't willing to switch.

  5. Many times in the article it was mentioned how the idea of having Apple products on a subscription basis was already occurring. There are many companies such as Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T that have upgrade plans with customers. Apple will need to take these different plans that are already in place into consideration when deciding how they will implement a subscription program.

  6. In my opinion I feel like it would be unlikely Apple would lose a majority of its customers just because of how popular the iphone is. It seems that most people are willing to pay the price of Apple products in order to stay updated with the latest release.
