NFL Broadcasting Stocks Slump as Protests Rise and TV Ratings Fall

Throughout the past month, the overall stock market is up 2%.  But companies that broadcast NFL games like Comcast, Walk Disney, Fox, and CBS are all down between 1% and 8%.

It began when the San Francisco 49ers player, Colin Kaepernick started protesting against the National Anthem.  This year, protests have begun due to people believing Kaepernick, who is now without a team, is being treated wrongly by the league.

Some thought that the NFL ratings dip wouldn’t be long term, but the ratings this year have been even worse than last year.  The networks pay about $5 billion to televise the NFL games and were already facing unflattering margins on advertising profits.  Some have speculated that the drop in NFL ratings could trim the broadcaster’s earnings by $200 million.

  1. Very telling how tight the NFLPA's presence has impacted the league, all the players really support one another. Truly a shame that it effects TV ratings. It was only a matter of time before another controversial NFL issue were to arise. These things happen every now and this too should eventually pass and be accepted by viewers.

  2. I am not entirely sure that the drop in the stock prices can be chocked up solely to NFL viewership, and more specifically Mr. Kaepeernick protests, is quite questionable. For example Comcast dropped substantailly one day due to one of its executives forecasting it would lose video subscribers this quarter at a conference. So I don't think that this drop in NFL viewership is of great concern as once people start moving back into their homes in the Southeast viewership will return to its normal levels.

  3. There could be a lot of different reasons as to why the stock prices are going down for those companies that broadcast NFL games. One reason could be the rising prices in cable, which seem to be increasing. Another reason could be as you said, the protesting of Colin Kaepernick is creating a lot of negative press for the NFL. It will be interesting to see what happens with all those broadcasting companies over the course of the NFL season

  4. It's crazy to see how influential the actions of one person can be. Colin Kaepernick has made a big impact on the NFL and also the entire country. His decision to kneel for the national anthem has caused other players to join his movement. It is interesting that the movement has become big enough to effect the NFL and the TV ratings. I suspect that until some ethical and social changes happen in this country, players will continue to kneel for the national anthem, and TV ratings will continue to go down.

  5. I disagree with the stances these NFL players are taking by protesting the national anthem. I believe the national anthem is very important and I feel like these stances tarnish the song. The song is to used to show how proud a person is that they are an american. NFL players have a huge influence on the younger generation. If younger kids see constant disrespect for the flag they wont be proud to be Americans. Protesting patriotism will lead to a younger generation having a low moral to fight for their country and a huge part of GDP is government spending. If future generations don't care about having a strong military the United States will look weak and if we actually have to fight then people wont have a burning desire to win.

  6. I think that NFL players using the national anthem as a platform to spread their message is a well calculated strategy. They are protesting the inequality and injustices experienced by minorities in this country. Its unfortunate that the opposing media outlets are able to make this a two sided conflict, which further divides us as a country. When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a public bus, she wasn't protesting public transportation, she was protesting for the same reasons as the NFL football players are. Unfortunately, a lot of people are very upset by the protests and are boycotting the NFL by pulling sponsorships, and burning season tickets. In my opinion everyone needs to chill and just play football. It will be interesting to see how cable companies, and different channels with a more conservative management respond to the protest.
