Recall of Hoverboards

During this past holiday season we saw how many people were excited about the hoverboards. Everyone was requesting these as their holiday presents and of course most of the young adults had to purchase one. Everyone began posting videos and pictures about their experience, however, not everyone shared the same experiences. Some of the videos or pictures posted on social media showed the hoverboards catching on fire or exploding. The article mentions how these fires led to about a $2 million in property damage. Now the manufacturers decided to recall these scooters because they failed to meet the safety requirements. This is going to affect their reputation and their profits.

  1. This will defiantly affect the reputation and profits of the companies that produce these. I was surprised to see how no single company was singled out, or that there was a list given of the companies that did meet the safety requirements.

  2. For those products which are designed to "rest foot", safety requirements are always the first factor to consider. The recall of hoverboards, absolutely affects the reputation of the company. They will lose many customers which will eventually affect the profit. I am curious that in this situation, how the company would do to save its reputation and customers.

  3. I honestly see the entire hover board phenomenon as a fad. Right now there are so many different companies that offer pretty much the same exact product. The only differentiating factor is that some of them play music. Many colleges and universities have banned them on campuses and now that there has been a huge recall I think it will hurt the market for hover boards.

    1. You raise an interesting point. I would agree that it is probably just a fad, but they really screwed up by not creating a well tested and safe product.

  4. Although hover boards are a very different and unique addition to the global markets it is surprising to see how some of the manufacturers were not able to meet the safety requirements. As the article suggests it has been a great hit with the consumers due to its ability to differentiate itself from other products. Now days with social media, such news spread like wild fire and it can be detrimental for the companies future sales revenue as well as the brand image itself.

  5. The amount of property damage the hover boards have done is amazing to think about, and you are now seeing this product banned from universities and many other places. The future of the hover board is not looking good and it is looking like they are causing more harm then good, which could cause a big loss in jobs in the future.
