Google In China

This article discusses the decision made by Google to effectively withdraw from operations in China. Although it is a primarily political/sociological analysis of the issue, it does get briefly into the economics of the situation and it is a thorough analysis that I found very enlightening. This move by google obviously has huge implications for their future operations, and it also highlights the sometimes thin line between political and economic policy in China.

  1. Declining from China would be a huge loss for google, and it will also greatly impact the searching engine market in China. The other big searching engine company, baidu, can possess evem larger market share in this area after google's left. However, the possible monopoly in searching engine market would finally jeopardize consumers' interest.

  2. The decision for google to pull out of China was a bold move to say the least. By pulling out of China, google lost a large part of its market share to other potential search engines. It will be interesting to see which search engines step up in China and what happens to google in the future.

  3. This really does seem to be a moral decision by Google, but so far there has been no word of China revoking Google's ability to operate within the country. Google simply made the move to stop censoring its results but it did not actually withdraw from China, and I have seen no indicators that the Chinese government is planning on shutting Google down in the near future.
