Chicago cancels Thanksgiving plans as lockdown begins. Will the rest of the country follow?

This past week, Chicago mayor asked residents to "cancel Thanksgiving plans and stay at home unless they need to go to work or school or to tend to essential needs such as a doctor’s appointment or grocery shopping.". This seems all to similar to the nationwide lockdown the country saw earlier this year. Mike Dewine also came out this past week and mentioned the possibility of a lockdown in Ohio as well. As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, there is increasing speculation of another lockdown looming for the country. However, there seems to be a vaccine euphoria regarding the virus, and many argue a lockdown is not needed if the virus will be ready in the next few months.

An additional lockdown would likely hurt an already crippled United States economy, but no lockdown could lead to increased cases, and potential deaths. So what do you think? Should the US go into another lockdown? Will other large cities follow Chicago? How will the Biden administration handle this issue differently than the Trump administration?

  1. I really hope the United States doesn't go into another lockdown!

  2. I honestly believe that with the new presidency and the up take in covid cases we will be going into lockdown soon

  3. I also agree that we will see lockdowns coming our way with the new presidency. I think they want to significantly slow the spread of cases because they still aren’t sure how long until the vaccine is truly safe and how long the distribution will take. I think a lockdown will significantly hurt the economy again and undoubtedly increase the deficit, but the question becomes is that really worth it when a vaccine could be around the corner?

  4. I think it should be decided by state government and local government is a lockdown is needed. In Ohio, I do not believe another lockdown will occur before a vaccine comes out. The Biden administration will likely impose expansionary policies to raise consumer confidence and get the economy going, like another stimulus check.

    1. Agreed it should not be decided at the federal level. Covid cases vary a great deal state by state and even county by county. A federal lockdown would likely be overkill for many areas.

  5. Lockdown was something that was tried before but it didn't really help with the reduction of cases. While some people take it seriously, others go about their day as if there is nothing to worry about, negating the point of a lockdown. Hence, I do not think going into lockdown is an effective strategy. On the other hand, imposing mandatory SOPs would be more helpful in my opinion. As long as people follow the given guidelines, transmission of the virus would reduce a substantial amount.

  6. I think that we should hold off on a lockdown if possible. I feel like people are unlikely to follow the rules of a lockdown anyways this time around. People have become used to living with coronavirus, and I do not think a lockdown will change their lifestyles. The economy may ultimately suffer from something that did not help the number of cases.

  7. Public officials have difficult decisions to make as virus cases soar. Lockdowns could help control the spread of the virus but the economic, social and emotional costs of lockdowns are significant too. A regional approach, not just be state but by county or city, seems like the most reasonable strategy for managing the virus given the variance in case counts in different parts of the country.
