Unemployment Claims Are Down, but Many Workers Lower Expectations

 https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/22/business/economy/unemployment-claims.html

Those temporary layoffs are lasting a lot longer than expected due to Covid, and there doesn't seem to be an end in sight due to the new wave. The number of people applying for unemployment has fallen, but still at an alarming level. Senate Republicans are fighting against yet another stimulus. People are now changing expectations now that these changes seem to be permanent. We are starting to see people leave the labor market altogether. Only 53% of those laid off due to the Coronavirus have returned to work. This number is too low. Only 39% thought they would go back to their jobs, however. How do you think the decrease in the people in the labor force will affect the upcoming election?

  1. I believe the amount of people unemployed and not returning to the labor force will drive more people to vote. I think a lot of people are frustrated with how COVID-19, stimulus packages, and overall response has made people frustrated and nervous for the future. So, I think people are more moved to the polls this year.

  2. I think that people who have not returned to work will more likely vote. Not only will they have the time to drive to the polls, but they may be frustrated with the governments response to the pandemic.

  3. People that are out of the labor force are more likely to vote in this election. Also, in general more people are voting and even encouraging others to vote as well so it will be interesting to see the results. With unemployment still being at an alarming rate, how long do you think it will take following the election to return to a more normal level?

  4. In my accounting class, we were just talking about furloughs becoming permanent job losses. I think that at the beginning of the pandemic, people did not know how long it would take to recover so businesses let people go, saying they were "furloughed." But now that we know it will take a long time to get back to normal, more people have realized they are indeed laid off. I would imagine many people are upset with how the government has responded to the pandemic and how it became a political tool, preventing an actual recovery to occur. Furthermore leading to a permanent loss of their jobs. As everyone else has said, I think this will cause more people to vote, especially since politics have been a topic of concern for the past several months.
