A Peek at Future Jobs Shows Growing Economic Divides

Forecasting jobs for the future is vital to economic and career planning. As technology evolves, more and more manufacturing jobs are lost to automated processing. Its cheaper, and more efficient despite the fact that it is putting Americans out of a job. As the world continues to evolve, jobs requiring at least a bachelors degree are expected to grow. In addition to this, "Jobs in health care and clean energy will continue to grow rapidly. Manufacturing jobs will shrink, as will occupations involving data entry or other tasks that are increasingly being done by machines or algorithms. Overall job growth will continue to be slow, partly as a result of the aging of the baby boom generation; by 2026, even the youngest boomers will be approaching retirement". I think it will be very interesting to see if these projections are accurate, because there have been instances where projections were wrong and young adults were lead in the wrong direction. When looking at potential career paths, did you consider the future job market before you made any major decisions?

  1. Most of these projections appear to be very possible. It makes sense that jobs requiring at least a bachelor's degree are expected to grow because there are more people currently getting degrees than there ever has been. In today's society it is important to get a degree, if you want to receive a higher wage in the future. Also, manufacturing jobs will continue to shrink because technology will continue advancing. Instead of hundreds of people working in a factory, it will just be a couple engineers running the machines in the factories. For me, I knew that if I got a degree, it would make it easier to find a job with better benefits. Therefore, I decided to go to college and get a degree.

  2. This is definitely an issue that younger generations are facing in the job market. Available positions will decrease in certain industries such as the manufacturing industry as you mentioned. However, the increase in demand for robotics and other technology will provide opportunities for a lot of people as well. The only issue with this is that many of these new jobs will be for college educated workers. This could cause a larger divide between those who poses a high school diploma and those who poses a bachelors degree or higher.

  3. As it may seem to be a harsh reality, I think the projection of higher education being necessary is true. Our country is becoming smarter and smarter (especially the younger generations). That being said, there will be jobs for the hardworking men/women who have had experience for several years. Our country is headed in the right direction and we need to be open to change.

  4. As Zack said above this is going to be a very big issue for the young generations. If there is still a decrease in certain industries that just means there will be less jobs to go around and unemployment will just keep going up.
