Increased wedding bill in 2012.

http://money.cnn.com/2013/03/10/pf/wedding-cost/index.html?iid=HP_LN

According to an annual survey of 17,500 couples released by wedding website TheKnot.com, In 2012, newlyweds spent an average of $28,427 on weddings and related events — the highest amount since 2008.
The survey found out that couples spent more in all the categories, from the photographer and invites to the wedding DJ.  "Couples are a little bit more comfortable and able to splurge a little bit more," said site director Anja Winikka.
And at many weddings, a DJ or band was just not enough. Last year, 27% of weddings included additional entertainment -- such as a photo booth or caricature artist -- more than double the percentage who did so in 2011.
According to Winikka, all those things, in today's world, is not a splurge, but a need.

  1. The number $28,427 actually shocked me. Of course I do not plan on getting married anytime soon, but I did not think an AVERAGE wedding would cost that amount of money. It is comforting, however, that couples are more comfortable when they are getting married which is a good sign for the economy.

  2. It is startling that couples spend more on there wedding now a days then the down payment on a starter home! I think that the increasing cost in weddings is due to all the glamour and hype surrounding it. It isn't difficult to find a show about wedding planning on tv, young girls already start planning there weddings from the glamorous ones they see on tv. From Say Yes to the Dress to Four Weddings, the more they see and want the more zeroes there'll be on the bill.

  3. I agree with the above comments. There can definitely be more budgeting going on. However, I was surprised that catering was only $63 a person. I had anticipated it being much higher than that since one of the weddings I went to when I was younger was about $100 a plate.
And I have to agree with Maggie that the wedding shows probably don't help. It is less about getting married now and more about the glam and the reception, which is frustrating.
