For Retailers, a Halloween Shock: It’s Actually Happening

Sales of Halloween costumes and decorations have been stronger than what was expected with the pandemic. People are seeing this day as the last day for the kids to have fun outdoors before winter hits. “While Mr. Berman, like many other business owners, has welcomed the volume of Halloween sales given the uncertainty of the moment, he noted that before the pandemic, 2020 was poised to be a bonanza for the holiday and party industry.” Some business owners are saying people are dressing up and decorating the house much more leading to more sales than ever before in the history of their stores. “The National Retail Federation, an industry group, expected Halloween consumer spending to hit about $8 billion this year, a decline from $8.8 billion last year, as a result of fewer Halloween parties and haunted house visits and less trick-or-treating. But enthusiasm around costumes and decorations has persisted.” Halloween sales are higher than anyone could have ever expected, but It is nice to see strong sales considering this crazy year for retailers.

Do you think that Halloween fun will get too chaotic and we will see a rapid increase in cases to come? Do you think a significant increase in cases will lead to a shutdown like in France? Increased sales will help our economy now, but do you see it coming back on us with a shutdown?

  1. I think Halloween events may lead to a bit of increase in cases but I don't think that it by itself will be enough to cause a shutdown. I do think that a increase in restrictions is definitely going too happen in the future do to the alarming increase in cases, I don't think this quick burst of consumption is worth sacrificing are log term growth

  2. I think that yes, Halloween events are still going to happen and cases will rise a bit, but not more than we've seen already. Cases are rising all over the world even without Halloween, so I feel these closures might be coming just in time. I do not think we will have a shutdown completely.

  3. Cases for covid have been steadily increasing in the state of Ohio so I do believe that after Halloween weekend the cases will increase but at the same time cases were already increasing. I do think another shutdown is a possibility considering these cases are not stopping.

  4. I think many people look forward to the holidays as a way to return to normal during the pandemic but social distancing protocols will eliminate parties for children and adults alike so spending this year on costumes and decorations will almost certainly be lower; and if the decorations and trick or treat traffic in my neighborhood are indicative of the nationwide trends, it could turn out to be a disappointing season for Halloween retailers.

  5. I think wearing a mask and being covid safe has become the social norm, so I am hopeful this will persist throughout Halloween. It is understandable that sales have persisted above expectations for Halloween. It has been awhile since a holiday has been enjoyed by US citizens, and since Halloween is on a weekend, this a perfect opportunity to enjoy the traditions again. I believe these increased sales will not cause another shut down.

  6. I do not think halloween will have that much of a direct impact on cases, but if it does they will likely rise slightly. I think many people, and especially families, are having their own Halloween at home, or atleast in a socially distanced manner. People our bored at home and are looking for an excuse for something to do, and halloween is that perfect outlet.

  7. I think Halloween would not have such a huge impact, that would result in a shutdown. I do believe it might cause people and the government to impose more restrictions to stay safer and maybe end up, increasing government expenditures through stimulus checks since restrictions would not allow people to go back to their jobs but it would allow them to somehow carry on with their lives. But it would not cause the country to shut down because the US will not be able to come back from it if it ever happens. US is already in huge debts and far below the normal line financially which means any more blows could be a permanent problem.
