Las Vegas Shooting Effect on Economy

Tourism is the big thing for Las Vegas and after the shooting that could really impact the economy and the amount of people that pass through.  But Mayor Carolyn Goodman made it seem like it would have she did not think this type of tragedy could impact their economy significantly.  She even made a point to say that this type of thing could happen anywhere and it was just unfortunate that it happened to be in Las Vegas where the biggest source of income and money is from tourist.  But past statistics say otherwise.  Looking at the two specific attacks that happened around the world and both the cities where these occurred saw dramatic drops in visitation.  The two cities were Miami and Paris.  In Miami after the mass shooting they saw visitation drop by about 7% and in Paris they saw hotel occupancy drop by 12% and visitation severely decreased.  This could be a huge issue for Las Vegas because they really cannot afford for people to stop visiting because that is where all of their money seems to come from tourist.  This should only really affect the short run economy for the most part because as sad as it is people will forget about the attack after the next couple months so more people will be coming back to Las Vegas later on because they will not be worried about shootings occurring.

  1. I'm sure for the next couple months people will be a little skeptical of visiting Las Vegas because of the shooting. Therefore, Las Vegas' income from tourism will probably decrease. Over time, people will forget about this tragedy and tourism will spike again. It is scary, but these tragedies really can happen anywhere. It is very unfortunate for the people involved in the shooting, and for the city of Las Vegas that this tragedy happened.

  2. I agree that this could impact Las Vegas heavily in the short run. With tourism as a major source of revenue, the worry of another shooting happening in the high traffic area can cause a major decline in attendance, and therefore money. However, I think that it might not drop as much as we think. Since there will be a much larger police/authority presence in the high traffic areas, it will cause people to believe it is still safe to go. In addition, I think people will still go to Las Vegas because in the past there has not been a major attack twice in the same area (or at least that I could find). The fact that Las Vegas will be under high supervision from police will hopefully make people feel safer than before, and therefore not drop the revenue this area receives from tourists.

  3. I agree with Erin's point. It was the largest attack in US history, however with higher caution and more police in the area Las Vegas will become a place that was safer than before. The attack was tragic and will be in the minds of travelers but I don't think it will be to the degree of not wanting to visit it ever again. I agree that in the short term tourism could drop but not enough to significantly impact Vegas' economy.

  4. This is actually interesting for me because I'm going on a trip to Las Vegas over fall break. I'll be able to see a little bit of the effect on the short run economy. It'll also be interesting to see how Las Vegas bounces back after this tragedy. Do hotel also intend to add changes to their security procedures? These changes will effect their overall spending so it'll be interesting to see how much they are willing to spend if any at all.

  5. Personally, I would think twice about going to a large concert or music festival now. This could potentially impact the attendance and revenue generated by these performances. Jake brought up a good point of the hotels needing to increase security, but also do the concerts need to be increasing security? Specifically in this shooting, the shooter was not inside the venue. But there have been many instances where bombings and shootings have happened at concerts. How much more can law enforcement do to keep people safe?

  6. I agree with Alicia about thinking twice about going to a concert or music festival. I feel as if many people are only thinking about the effect that it will have on Las Vegas. I'm sure it will have the biggest effect there, but there are many large music festivals and concerts that go on around the country that will also be affected. I saw in another article that the gunman had a hotel room reserved facing lollapalooza. Are people only thinking about Las Vegas or are they also thinking about the impact this could have country-wide, maybe even worldwide?

  7. While I agree with everything that has been stated thus far, I believe the largest economic turmoil facing Las Vegas could be a decrease in stocks. The recent shooting has the world watching Vegas, and not in a good way. Whether or not the shooting will have severe economic affects in the long run may not matter if investors get nervous within the next few months. Any drastic reduction in investors in the hotel and casino industry could have a strong impact on Las Vegas's tourism and economy as a whole.
