Immigrants Are Keeping America Young — And The Economy Growing

This article explores some of the truths about immigration that are actually benefiting the U.S. First off, the native-U.S. population and labor force participation rate are declining as more and more baby-boomers enter retirement, and birth rates decrease. However, the increasing amount of young immigrants is maintaining growth in the U.S. economy in contrast to economies like Japan where the aging population is creating more and more of a problem. Immigrants in the U.S. do not really steal jobs away from U.S.-natives according to economists. Instead they take the lower-skilled jobs that no one is willing to have anyway; but, many immigrants are entrepreneurial and actually much more likely to start a business than a U.S.-native. So, although there is increasing reinforcement to the negative connotation of immigration, there are actually many positive gains that are keeping our economy afloat while other 'old' countries are in decline.

  1. I like that this article explains the benefits. I feel like this subject is always so negative and showing the bad parts that no one ever really is able to see that there can be benefits. Thanks for sharing, it is a good read.

  2. This is a great article, especially with the election going on, because both presidents have such different viewpoints on immigration. If Hilary is elected then we will see this immigration continue, but if Trump is elected we will most likely see immigration decline. If Trump is elected according to this article we can expect our economy to slow down, as immigration will slow down.

  3. Considering the poltical climate, this article was a breath of fresh air. Immigration, if done right, has a massive plus to the economy of this country. Historically, the US has thrived because of its immigration policies and this article highlights very well that immigration is not all negative.

  4. Immigrants don't cripple our economy. When done right it can have a positive effect. I think one thing that the article highlights is that immigrants don't impair opportunity, they are creative and are just as competitive as natives here. They are motivated not to survive but truly live by their means and ends.

  5. This article is really interesting since Donald trump mentioned that immigrants are stealing jobs away from local US natives. But in reality, they are filling low-skilled job, and because of immigrants, the US has a high birth rate as compared to Japan and Western Europe. Immigration is keeping our economy afloat since immigrants bring resources, information, intellect, and are productive in nature.
