Ford may join Uber and Lyft in the ride-sharing business

I thought that this was an interesting article because it talks about how car companies are investing in these company's like Uber and Lyft. Companies like these are growing huge in big cities are putting a hurting on regular cab companies. In the article it talks about how car companies are looking in to making cars that drive them-self which will eliminate a driver which would allow Uber and Lyft more money cause they wont have to split the money with the driver. I don't know how i feel about vehicles that drive them selves because that will cut back on the amount of jobs needed in some companies because they wont need to hire drivers to transport the goods.

  1. Interesting thought that Ford wants to team up with these companies. I think it is a smart move for both companies, as long as Ford can be able to create the cars that will drive themselves. I think a lot of progress has been done on achieving this but there are still some problems for companies such as Google who have been testing these cars out on the road. As long as these cars that can drive themselves work, it's a win-win situation for Ford and companies like Uber and Lyft.

  2. That seems interesting but do you think people would be comfortable with automated cars as chauffeurs?

  4. I think the driverless car is going to be a hard sell when it comes to consumer markets. Consumers are going to be very hesitant about jumping in a computer operated car and heading down the highway. It'll be interesting to see how companies like Uber/Lyft adapt when the driverless car becomes more mainstream and accepted.

  5. I think this is an interesting idea. While I agree that these cars will be hard to sell to the general public at first, I believe consumers will begin to increase their faith in the cars once they prove they are as good or better than normal drivers. Additionally, if these automated vehicles do become mainsteam they will eliminate the jobs for drivers but they will create jobs in more specialized fields, such as engineering and computer science. Any increase in A will also increase the overall standard of living in a population, for all of its members.

  7. The idea of automated cars sounds like a good idea but it isn't very practical. I believe that drivers like to have a sense of control behind the wheel and this will strip that from them. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds and how it will change the auto industry.

  8. Wouldn't the automation of cabs/cars have the same effect on employment like the automation of the assembly line had for the car industry? While you may feel uncomfortable, if we have the technology and it is reliable, it is only a matter of time till companies adopt it to save costs.

  9. Theoretically, this is a good idea. The company itself will do better due to costs, but I think it would negatively affect its sales. I think many people would not feel safe. I don't think that self driving vehicles would be able to factor in decisions of other human drivers on the road.

  10. I have to disagree with the idea of a lack of safety with an automated driver. These new cars will be programed to follow specific rules. Some of the main reasons for car accidents are distracted drivers, speeding, and drunk driving. Given the fact that a machine will be programed to obey traffic laws I do not think there would be a reduction in sales or demand.

  11. I agree with Luke. This is another industry that the job market would suffer from becoming automated. Transportation is such a large industry I think it would take a huge toll on the the labor force.
