Social Security pays millions to dead people

In this article, Blake Ellis discusses some of the major flaws of Social Security. While most people are worried that they will not be able to get Social Security payments when they retire, it is the case that millions of dollars worth of benefits are sent to people who have passed away. In fact, sometimes even after a death has been added to the master file, the Social Security benefits continue to be sent to their house.

The article goes on to give examples of these occurrences, as well as explain many other flaws in the Social Security system, such as overpaying or paying an incorrect amount to a beneficiary. It also discusses the reactions of families of those who received the benefits after their loved one had passed away.

  1. Interesting article. This is just one more broken part of the social security machine. You would think with all of the technology available in the U.S. that keeping an accurate account of who should be taken off the social security pay list wouldn't be that hard . This is one area that I think the U.S. could really benefit from looking at other countries social security programs and making some drastic changes.

  2. We don't have to look far to find gloomy forecasts for the future of social security. One particularly stunning prediction states that by 2040, if social security is still around, 60% of our income tax will be taken for social security and medicare leaving only the scraps for the rest of our government to function on. To see an article like this only dampens what little hope i had for social security.
