Potential Ban on Tik Tok and its effects on the US Economy

A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers has introduced a bill that, if passed, would ban TikTok in the country. The ANTI-SOCIAL CCP ACT (Averting the National Threat of Internet Surveillance, Oppressive Censorship and Influence, and Algorithmic Learning by the Chinese Communist Party) names TikTok's parent company, ByteDance, as one of the companies subject to the restrictions in the bill. The proposed legislation follows years of concern from the Trump and Biden administrations about the potential for Chinese government influence on the social media platform. TikTok has repeatedly insisted that U.S. user data is stored safely outside of China and is therefore not subject to Chinese government access.the economic effects would depend on a number of factors, including how the ban is implemented and how the company responds. However, some possible economic effects of a TikTok ban could include raising tensions between the US and China which could have even more adverse effects effects on trade. The ban on tik tok would also diminish what tik tok contributes to the US economy and GDP- although this would give room for US based social media companies to contribute more.

  1. It's interesting to see just how much social media can impact the world and even the economy, and it's especially unique in this situation where Tik tok holds power when it comes to trade with China. I'm curious to see if the bill will end up passing and if so how much impact it will really have on trade

  2. Tiktok has taken the country by storm and has opened up a new platform to allow brands to push products and services. This is an interesting topic because the US could be enforcing this ban to allow a US based company to take its place. I think this could lead to a rise in tension between China and the US

  3. Its very interesting that there is so much concern when a foreign country has access to your data. Another thing interesting about tiktok is how that the algorithm in china promotes science and math based tiktoks about learning where as in the U.S it promotes dances and other less useful information. China has a large influence now what our youth watch and what they spend there free time consuming. I believe that a ban would be something more favorable to the future of US.

  4. I remember this being an issue over the height of COVID. I think it is important to ensure that user data is protected. It will be interesting to follow this story for policy developments around use of the app.

  5. I love this article! I've always found tiktok to be such a useless app. And if there were a ban I would be for it. I'm interested in the way that other countries promote certain videos/subjects for others to watch to improve actual skills. The US does it for pure amusement and I believe it just makes people dumber.
