Germany Debates whether to import hydrogen or produce domestically

 [Source]

Germany, on its way to attempt to go completely carbon-neutral in the near future, along with other EU states, is currently debating whether to chemically produce the hydrogen needed to fuel the future locally, or opt for importing it elsewhere.

Hydrogen is used in clean energy as an "energy carrier" and storage, not a primary source, using electricity to split water into oxygen and hydrogen. It is likely they will need to produce locally and import from overseas in order to meet demand, although the conversation is being shifted to attempt to produce locally first in order to stimulate their economy.

Germany, Europe's largest economy by far, has had a focus in recent years in attempting to help the economies of surrounding countries that aren't as well off before helping themselves.

In your opinion, should Germany seek to produce locally and help build up their economy even more, or put the production burden on their EU neighbors in order to stimulate the EU more as a whole?

  1. I think that because Germany is part of the EU, stimulating the economy of Germany will help the EU in whole. I think that Germany should stimulate their economy especially with the pandemic. Germany will be able to help other countries out if they get back to their pre-pandemic economy.

  2. I agree with Ethan that stimulating Germany’s economy is beneficial. I think that Germany should take the opportunity to improve their economy even more now and produce domestically. Later down the road they can still help the surrounding countries.

  3. It would be wise for Germany to invest in its own hydrogen industry to stimulate its own economy and to demonstrate how a country might switch to an energy system in which hydrogen plays a major role. However, there is no reason for Germany to attempt to avoid foreign competition. All competition would mean is lower prices for hydrogen and more countries investing in hydrogen, thus helping consumers and the planet.

  4. it would be smart for Germany to invest in its own hydrogen production and since Germany is such a huge exporter they could use it as another export to help the EU

  5. Like you said, Germany is the largest economy in the EU, and they aid other countries the most in helping their economies. If Germany is too generous though and doesn't focus on themselves, they won't be able to assist other countries anymore because their own economy is weaker. I think if they produce domestically, it will help Germany strengthen it's economy which will contribute to an even better EU economy as a whole.
