Coming to a Office Near You

http://www.economist.com/news/leaders/21594298-effect-todays-technology-tomorrows-jobs-will-be-immenseand-no-country-ready

In the article "Coming to a Office Near you" the author talks about how technology will have an immense impact on our economy and on tomorrow's jobs.  Technology is always improving and some people see this as a bad thing.  With so much innovation an technology improvement many of tomorrows jobs are in jeopardy of being taken over by computers.  The article says "a recent study done by Oxford University 47% of today's jobs could be automated in the next two decades".  Although innovation and technology are threatening many of today's jobs they may be creating some as well because as the rich get richer and wealthier they will demand more goods and services.  In order to combat this problem the article suggests that schooling will have to change in many ways and the government and political leaders will have to take some type of action before it get to bad and unemployment is at an all time high.

  1. I do support the fact that technology will have a major impact on our economy and jobs of tomorrow, but I don’t see computers completely taking over the jobs of tomorrow any time soon. I do see technology improving our lives, creating new jobs, increasing our life expectancy, and connecting the world together. . Furthermore, as the advances of technology improvement continue, the demand for higher education will increase. Yes, I do agree that some of the jobs will be replaced by computers, but the computers will need us to repair them.

  2. I to see technology eventually taking the place of human labor. Granted, it will take awhile for technology to even take a majority of jobs now. I also agree that schooling is going to have to change. How is schooling going to change? I don't know, but I think the demand for engineers and mechanics will raise.

  3. I think it is interesting that all of this talk about technology is happening because as the article mentions, I see this as something that has happened already in the past. As humans, we will continue to innovate and come up with new technological advances. I don't think this is something to be majorly concerned about, but we should be aware of it and how it does make a difference in the overall economy; especially in this time now that seems to be in transition.

    This quote is very though-provoking:

"When Instagram, a popular photo-sharing site, was sold to Facebook for about $1 billion in 2012, it had 30m customers and employed 13 people. Kodak, which filed for bankruptcy a few months earlier, employed 145,000 people in its heyday."

Jobs are being shifted and workers must develop new skills in order to compete. As seen in these numbers, the number of jobs is decreasing in certain areas. The main theme that I got out of the article is that we must continue education to find ways to continue to grow with these changes.

  4. While technology might take over some human jobs this will not only take a long time, but also like the article discussed maybe create other human jobs. With the increase in production people might see that there are more things to buy. Also, people are still going to need to control the machines. Maybe some schooling should focus on technology and working and understanding it.
